Improving Mindfulness at a Boutique Hotel in Seminyak

15Jan

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic can never be understated. No one is 100% safe from the virus, but on the other hand, no one should let stress and depression threaten their mentality and positive outlook for the coming year in 2021.

If 2020 had a theme, it would be one of chaos. So let 2021 be the year of recovery and practice mindful meditation while on holiday, for example, at a boutique hotel in Seminyak.

Practicing mindfulness is good for mental health

What is mindfulness and why is it good for mental health?

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one’s attention to the present moment and experiencing all sensations, thoughts, and emotions in that moment without judgement. This is usually done through mindfulness meditation.

Practitioners of mindfulness believe that a constantly wandering mind, one that is not engaged with the present moment, is a ‘lost mind’. A person who thinks constantly about the past or the future has virtually caused oneself harm by letting go of the perception of control.

Neither the past nor the future is in one’s fullest control, but the present is. By deliberately focusing on one thing — often the sensation of deep, deliberate breathing — coupled with having an observant attitude towards fleeting emotions, you are free from the burdens of the past and future, for that brief moment, to experience one of the best feelings that the human mind can feel — acceptance.

How to practice mindfulness?

Practicing meditation is one way to do it. Go to a peaceful environment. Some people prefer a bedroom, while others prefer the natural outdoor ambience, perhaps near a swimming pool. Take a comfortable seated position, and close your eyes. Take each breath slowly for a few seconds, hold the breath and gently breathe out, pausing before taking another breath. Each breath should be deliberate, graceful, and most importantly, relaxing.

When your mind begins to wander due to boredom or anxiety, simply disengage and place your focus back on your breathing. Do this without self judgement; just a gentle refocusing on your breathing. You are alive, and you are well. Being able to breathe is a gift. Simply observe what you are thinking, without judgement, without elaboration, excuses, or explanations.

Once you are done with this short but valuable practice, you may feel so much better. This is due to the serotonin, the “calmness hormone”, that your brain has produced in the process.
