08Sep

If you love spending time in the great big outdoors, then you’re in for a treat because Bali is not just about beautiful beaches, beach clubs and waves. Here, you can find some of the most beautiful destinations in nature such as waterfalls, jungle treks, mountains and canyons where you can go hiking, trekking and even camping.

Here are some of the more popular destinations that are safe and renowned amongst those who love to spend time outdoors.

1. Mount Batur

Let’s start with Bali’s most challenging hikes! Mount Batur is one of Bali’s most famous mountains. It’s popular amongst the more seasoned hikers and adventurers as a hiking destination. The mountain is an active volcano that towers over the island at 1,717 m high. If you get there early, you can enjoy breathtaking sunrise views of Lake Batur and the surrounding area. There are two ways to reach the summit – the three-hour trail is more challenging and leaves from Pura Jati or Toya Bungkah. The 45-minute trail leaves from the carpark at Serongga. After your hike, you can opt to relax in the many hot springs nearby.

2. Mount Agung

Bali’s most sacred mountain is home to the Mother Temple Besakih also known as Pura Besakih. The mountain stands at 3,031 meters tall – experienced hikers would take about 12 hours to complete the climb up and down the mountain. As Mount Agung is a holy site, it is off-limits during religious ceremonies and rituals. Be sure to always have a guide with you.

3. Mount Catur

If you’re looking for a relatively easy hike, then you’d love Mount Catur. It’s a great alternative to the busier Mount Batur and the trails here are easier to follow. One of Bali’s volcanic peaks, it stands at 2,096m. The trek would begin at Gua Jepang also known as the Japanese Caves which were built by Japanese soldiers during World War II. The entire hike would take about 3 hours to complete.

4. Tirta Gangga

tirta gangga

Tirta Gangga is an ancient water palace built by the late King of Karangasem and all around it are beautiful rice fields, streams and villages. You can opt to enjoy a leisurely 6-hour stroll through the villages surrounding Tirta Gangga including Lempuyang, Bukit Kusami and Budakaling. At the end of the hike, take some time to relax at Tirta Gangga or cool down in one of its pools that is meant for swimming and is accessible to the public.

5. West Bali National Park

Located on the western coast of the island, the West Bali National Park is home to wide open plains and well-preserved forests. You may be able to spot the rare Bali Starling, the barking deer, wild pigs and even monkeys. Of late, West Bali National Park has become a popular location for “glamping” or glamour-camping in gorgeous five-star tents and modern amenities offered by eco-friendly resorts overlooking the ocean. Trekking, hiking and cycling are popular activities here, along with diving and snorkeling – the water surrounding the national park is filled with hundreds of beautiful underwater creatures and marine life.
