Nature Lover’s Guide to Valentine’s Day in Bali

07Feb

It’s Valentine’s Day season again, and this year we are going to post something different.

Last year, we wrote about various romantic activities, from the simple pleasures of watching a romantic sunset on a mountain, to an elaborate adventure on a helicopter. We’ve also written about places where you can have special romantic dinners, where we picked out the best high-quality restaurants in Seminyak close to The Colony Hotel.

This article is dedicated to couples who have come to Bali for Valentine’s Day to appreciate its simple natural side. Here are some activities you can do with your significant other, out in the beautiful outdoors.

1. A romantic rowboat ride on Lake Beratan, Bedugul.

Lake Beratan bali

You might have already seen the Ulun Danau Beratan temple on the 50,000 Rupiah banknotes. The breathtaking view of the mountains surrounding the calm lake, with the famous temple in the foreground, is the perfect scene to set up a romantic Valentine’s date in nature.

Lake Beratan is located in Bedugul, at the center of the island. From Seminyak it takes about two hours to reach the site. Once you’re there, rent a boat to enjoy the serene atmosphere while floating on the cool fresh water at 1200 meters above sea level.

2. A beautiful photoshoot at Tegalalang Rice Terrace (with farmers)

Tegalalang Rice TerraceWhen thinking of what Bali looks like, a particular scene from Eat, Pray, Love might pop in your head. You’d imagine lush green rice paddies, with coconut trees and tropical bushes sprouting along the edges of the terracing and a narrow asphalt road where Elizabeth Gilbert used to ride her bicycle in Ubud.

While the 2010 movie has made the location very popular among visitors, Tegalalang Rice Terrace is still authentically a collection of rice farms that real Balinese farmers maintain for a living.

Some farmers will be happy to pose with you and let you join in with the farming practice – this would make a very interesting activity for the couple. Do not forget to generously tip any of the welcoming farmers who have spent some of their work time for you.

3. A stunning view of the sea and hills at Bukit Tengah

Hike in Bali

Couples who enjoy trekking will appreciate the wonderful experience of hiking Bukit Tengah, which is very close to Wates Yeh Malet beach in Klungkung. The hills border the eastern side of Bali, so it’s possible to see a spectacular sunrise over Lembongan island, once you know your way up.

We strongly advise that you learn the route to the top of the hill in broad daylight. The steep road that leads to the hill is not always smooth and often unlit, and you will need to ask the locals for directions.

But once you have learned the directions, you could try coming back up again in the early morning to catch the beautiful sunrise and a hike in the cool morning. You will be rewarded with a bird’s-eye view of the hilly landscape that borders the sea, and of Padang Bai harbour lighting the sheltered bay.

4. Exploring Uluwatu and the sea temple

Uluwatu Temple
Uluwatu is one of the favourite romantic destinations in the whole Bali island – an especially ideal location for Valentine’s Day romantic photoshoot. Just do a quick Google Image search and see why.

Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the grand and mystical Pura Luhur Uluwatu, also known as the Uluwatu Temple, sits squarely at the edge of a sea cliff. Waves have battered against the cliff base for ages, but the towering and proud sea temple cliffside remains unmoved.

Uluwatu is also a cultural center for the local Hindu Balinese. They consider Pura Luhur Uluwatu to be one of the few main temples of the island that is crucial for the spiritual balance that holds the entire island.

It’s no surprise that at sundown, you can witness the amazing Kecak Fire Dance and chanting that can be enjoyed in one of the outdoor theaters.
