Nyepi In Bali Guide: How To Enjoy A Silent Day at Your Hotel

27Feb

Nyepi is a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese Hindu community, celebrated annually on the day before the Hindu new year. During Nyepi, all activities on the island come to a halt and the streets are empty as everyone stays indoors.

Visitors are required to stay in their accommodations and are not allowed to leave the property or make any noise. The restrictions are enforced by “Pecalang”, traditional security personnel. It is a time for self-reflection and a reminder to live in balance with nature. In order to respect the cultural customs and traditions during Nyepi, follow this guide to Nyepi in Bali.

  1. the international airport in Bali closes for 24 hours and,
  2. By local law, you are not allowed to go outside or even commute during Nyepi day.

While most public facilities are closed during Nyepi in Bali, emergency services such as the police, fire stations, and large hospitals will run as usual. Should you require emergency assistance you will receive a very special escort to the hospital by the local pecalang.
